29 July 2009 No Comment

SprinklerWater is a necessity for life on our planet. While there seems to be an abundance of it, it is not an unlimited resource. As more and more people populate the earth, more and more water is used. It only makes sense for us to reduce our use of water so that we will always have enough for everyone to use. Conserving water also saves money. Much of the water we use in our homes is used outside in the yard. That being said, here are 5 ways that we can all save some water in our landscapes:

1. Collect the Rain

Rain Barrelsare a great option for storing rain water for later use. Once you find one you like, just hook it up to your downspout and wait for the next rainstorm. Your barrel will fill up quickly providing you with free water to use for your yard!

2. Use Landscape Fabric

You may be wondering how landscape fabric will help you conserve water. Well, landscape fabric helps prevent weeds from growing in your flowerbeds. These weeds steal water from your other plants, which means you need to water more often to keep your plants alive. Another advantage is that the weed fabric is a chemical-free option to get rid of weeds!

3. Use Mulch

Mulch is helpful in conserving water in a couple ways. First, mulch also helps prevent weeds from growing in your yard and soaking up valuable water intended for your other plants. Mulch also helps slow down the evaporation of water. This means that your plants will have moist soil for a longer time and you won’t have to water as often. Put a layer of 2 to 4 inches around your plants to help conserve water.

4. Use Drought Tolerant Plants and Grass

Using drought tolerant plants and grass in your landscape is a great way to conserve water. Drought tolerant plants can withstand long periods of time without water, which means you don’t have to water them as often. This also means you have to spend less time doing yard work!

5. Use Water Absorbing Soil Amendments

Another great option for conserving water is to use water absorbing soil amendments. These amendments can soak up water that the plants don’t and keep it stored for later. This allows your plants to slowly absorb water over a longer period of time. Zebais one type of water absorbing soil amendment available.

These are just a few of the many ways we can conserve water and help our planet. If you have any ideas, tips, or opinions for conserving water, let us know by leaving a comment below!
