Bamboo Cutting Boards
I was looking through YouTube videos the other day and found this video about bamboo cutting boards. Bamboo is a woody grass that regrows much quicker than trees. Bamboo plants are a great choice for cutting boards for a few reasons:
- It doesn’t absorb much water so it won’t shrink or expand over time.
- Since it regrows quickly, it is an eco-friendly alternative to wood.
- It is naturally antibacterial.
- It doesn’t release chemicals like plastic cutting boards do.
- It is harder than most wood, which makes for a tough cutting surface.
You can buy bamboo cutting boards in stores such as Target and Bed, Bath, and Beyond. Check out some of Target’s bamboo cutting boards:
- Two-Tone Bamboo Cutting Board – Medium - A medium sized bamboo cutting board with a nifty built in handle for that cook on the go.
- Two-Tone Bermuda Cutting Board – XL – A large bamboo cutting board with a lot of room for you to prepare a lot of food.
- TruBamboo Bermuda Medium Bamboo Cutting Board – A smaller bamboo cutting board.
- Architec Gripperwood Bamboo All-Purpose Board – Another smaller bamboo cutting board except this one has rubber feet to prevent it from sliding around while you slice and dice.
(The two-tone medium and XL cutting boards are the ones Martha and I use and we really like them
)
Bed, Bath, and Beyond sells the Dexas Over-the-Sink Bamboo Strainer Board. You can place it over the sink and use the built in strainer while you chop away. The strainer is collapsible, which makes storing it easy!
Bamboo cutting boards are not meant to be used in the dishwasher so only wash them by hand. Also, make sure you get natural, non-toxic mineral oil and use it once a month to help protect your boards and keep them looking brand new.

You state that bamboo cutting boards don’t release chemicals like plastic. But what about the method they use to press all the bamboo together? Are there adhesives involved? Softening agents? Wouldn’t these be released from the board into food?
When I said that bamboo cutting boards don’t release chemicals like plastic, I meant from the material itself, such as PVC from plastics. It’s true that the bamboo cutting boards use glue to hold together, but you can get ones made with formaldehyde free glue. This non-toxic glue is safe for you. So make sure you check out what type of glue is used on the cutting board before you buy it.
